Greening the 918

Greening the (918) mission is to assist Tulsa in becoming one of the greenest cities in the nation.

Greening the (918) is an interactive series of seminars designed to inspire organizations and individuals to take action and to lead the city to be one of the greenest cities in the nation. Each seminar will have a panel of experts and be moderated and graphically facilitated by Sean Griffin. The community will discuss what action steps Tulsa must take to overcome the challenges of becoming one of the greenest cities in the nation. Networking and refreshments will follow each seminar.

All seminars will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Central Center at Centennial Park, 1028 E. Sixth Street, Tulsa, OK.

Seminar topic, date, and goal:

Green Building (Thursday, November 13, 2008)
Goal: Tulsa expands the “green” building market and catches up with national trends toward “green” building practices and the use and availability of “green” building materials and fixtures.

Alternative Transportation (Tuesday, February 17, 2009)
Goal: Tulsa creates more walkable neighborhoods that integrate land use and economic development to include continuous sidewalks, observed bike lanes and viable public transit systems.

Ecological Footprint-City Wide (Tuesday, March 24, 2009)
Goal: The City of Tulsa and Tulsa city residents work together to reduce their carbon footprint.

Green Space (Tuesday, April 28, 2009)
Goal: Tulsa increases the percentage of green space within the city limits, thus reducing the heat island effect while also providing engaging live spaces for work and play.

Water Quality and Conservation (Tuesday, May 19, 2009)
Goal: Tulsa continues to: provide healthy drinking water to all residents; to discharge successfully treated wastewater back into the water cycle; and to educate all residents about the effects of non-point source water pollution.

Local Foods and Sustainable Agriculture (Tuesday, June 16, 2009)
Goal: Tulsa creates, supports, and promotes regional sustainable agriculture and the use of locally-grown and produced foods.

Solid Waste Management and Reduction (Tuesday, July 21, 2009)
Goal: Tulsa increases curbside recycling options for all residents, businesses and schools and moves toward the recycling of all organic waste in the Tulsa area.

Green Energy (Tuesday, August 18, 2009)
Goal: Tulsa continues to invest in Green Energy and positions itself as the “Green Energy Capital of the World,” encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in this arena.

Sustainable Economic Prosperity (Tuesday, September 15, 2009)
Goals: Tulsa becomes a “cradle to cradle”* community that continues to grow and develop in a sustainable manner.
*Cradle to Cradle is a concept explored by William McDonough & Michel Braungart in Remaking the Way We Make Things: Cradle to Cradle

Keeping Communication on Green Issues Transparent (Tuesday, October 20, 2009)
Goal: The City of Tulsa develops a complete and transparent reporting system on the City of Tulsa’s ecological footprint and initiatives and goals designed to reduce this footprint.
