Local Foods and Sustainable Ag.

Local Food is food that is produce and grown within an approximate 50 mile radius.  Most food travels over 1,500 miles before you consume it and most food is produced on large scale corporate farms that do not utilize sustainable practices.  The farmer, labor, consumer, water, soil and food are all factors in defining sustainable agriculture.

Greening the (918) Water Quality and Conservation Goal
Tulsa continues to provide healthy drinking water to all residents; to discharge successfully treated wastewater back into the water cycle; and to educate all residents about the effects of non-point source water pollution.

Green Tips

Greening up your food:

    •    Seek and buy local foods as often as you can
    •    Request local foods at restaurants and grocery stores and thank them when they do use local foods.
    •    Visit your local farmer’s markets (April to October)
    •    Plant a garden
    •    Compost your scraps and make new rich soil for your gardens.

Action

Each Greening the (918) seminar will have action steps that the community will collectively develop each evening. Additionally each seminar will have a Strategy Team that will assist in putting the actions into motion for the Tulsa Area.   Please Local Food and Sustainable Agriculture Strategy Session Graphically Facilitated Notes and Local Food and Sustainable Agriculture Strategy Session Linear Notes for more information on the results of the Local Food and Sustainable Agriculture seminar.
